Relocation Services Newsletter November 2008

RELOCATION SERVICES NEWSLETTER

NOVEMBER 2008

Only two months to go and it's 2009!! Well, we are now truly into the summer season although our KZN clients have been experiencing some strange weather patterns over the past few weeks, but hopefully are now also able to enjoy lovely hot summer days and beautiful summer evenings !

Our Relocation Team has been particularly busy these past few weeks with many people deciding to either go over to Australia on a Jobsearch holiday, or to visit family or friends and visit different regions, or to relocate to NZ before the end of November.

We have 8 families scheduled to leave this month alone so please ensure you send those requests through early to avoid disappointment - especially if you are looking at visiting Brisbane as because it is a tourist destination as well, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find reasonably-priced accommodation over this peak season.

Flights are also starting to fill up quite quickly so please don't leave it too late to do those bookings. Please contact us for quotes.

In terms of Jobsearch we would recommend that you try and schedule your Jobsearch visits so that you are not trying to see recruiters or companies between the 15th Dec 2008 and the 7th Jan 2009 as many of them will be closed or working with skeleton staff during this time.

JOB SEARCH

    • Writing your Résumé

    • (Third part of three-part series)

Résumé Dilemmas

Not sure how to deal with these dilemmas?

  1. Being out of work

Many people in the workforce experience some unemployment period in their careers. Do not try to hide this on the résumé. If you are currently out of work, your other alternatives are to write the actual month that you left your last job or to write in some interim activity such as being self-employed

  1. Changing careers

A change in careers does require some justification on your part, so that it makes sense to an employer. Detail experiences where you have demonstrated ability in or preparation for success in a different occupational area.

  1. Gaps in work history

Many people have gaps in their work history. If you have a legitimate reason for major gaps, such as studyingl or having a child, you can simply state this on your résumé.

  1. Being fired and other negatives in your work history

There is no reason for a résumé to include any details related to why you have left previous jobs - unless, of course, they were positive. Eg. leaving to accept a more responsible job is to your credit.

  1. Over qualified

If you are willing, for whatever reason, to accept jobs where you may be defined as overqualified, be prepared to explain why you want this particular job and how your wealth of experience is a positive and not a negative.

  1. No degree or less education than typically required

If this is applies to you, take special care in preparing the education and experience sections of your résume, ensure you highlight the education and training you do have. Most often this will give you a chance at an interview that you might not otherwise get.

  1. Too little experience

Young people, including recent graduates, often have difficulty in getting jobs they want since employers will often hire someone with more experience. Emphasize your adaptive skills which would tend to overcome a lack of experience. Also consider expressing a willingness to accept difficult or less desirable conditions as one way to break into a field and gain experience.

  1. Too young

Young people need to present their youth as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. You may be willing to work for less money, accept less desirable tasks, work longer or less convenient hours, or do other things that a more experienced worker might not. If so, say so.

  1. Your job history is unrelated to your current career objective

If your previous work experience is in jobs that don't relate to what you want to do next, it is best to use a skills résumé. This allows you to emphasize those transferable skills that you have developed and used in other settings.

Retooling to change career paths

So you want to move to a different field entirely - don't forget to give your résumé a makeover.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Remember, a résumé is a marketing document. Do your homework on the organisations to which you're applying, and feature in the résumé what you can do for them in the future.

  2. Show potential employers how your experience in another field will benefit them.

  3. You're probably better off with a functional résumé. A functional résumé offers you the best opportunity to showcase skills rather than job experience; it's a forward-looking résumé.

Resume Tips

  • Keep it short, simple and to the point

  • Brief your referees before giving out their details
