New Zealand’s Changing Employment Scene

Many New Zealand industries have seen dramatic employment changes over the last 10-15 years - and the changes continue. Similar changes are occurring in most developed nations around the world:

·        The labour market is ageing. There’s been a big drop in the birth-rate, so our workforce is getting older. There aren’t so many young people to replace those who retire.
·        More people from other countries are working in New Zealand – we’re becoming more multi-ethnic.
·        Types of jobs are changing. More jobs are part-time, and more people are looking for a good lifestyle as well as a good salary.
·        The job market differs from one region to another. Most government jobs and jobs in large organisations are in the bigger cities, although there are exciting opportunities in regional centres too, especially for some occupations.

            Recent Employment Trends:

·        Up - more people are employed in service-based industries such as business and financial services, community and health services, wholesale and retail trade, and tourist services such as hotels

·        Down -fewer people are employed in agriculture, fisheries, and jobs such as working on farms or orchards, labouring and loading work

·        Down - unemployment has dropped – it was 4.4% in late 2003 – so there are more job opportunities

·        Up – growth over the last five years has been greatest in professional occupations - generally highly skilled jobs which often require a university degree

·        Up – sales and services jobs employ just as many people as professional occupations and this number is rising too

·        Up - there are more people employed part-time - the number of part-time jobs has increased faster than full-time ones

·        Up - there are more women in the workforce and more older people

·        Up - there are more people 15 - 19 working part-time – and more young people work while they’re studying

·        Up – in some industries, skills shortages are at the highest levels in 25 years – we need to recruit the right people from overseas

·        Up - the job market is changing faster than ever – there are more new jobs with new skill requirements, such as systems manager or quality assurance manager.
