Pre-departure information – Documents and Paperwork to take with you.

In addition to taking your passports and necessary visa's, it is important to take along other documentation with you that will assist in establishing your identity, enrolling your children in school, paying taxes and opening bank accounts in your new country. It is advisable that multiple copies of these documents are made and that you take them with you. It is not advisable to pack these in your container to be shipped. Keep them with you while you are travelling and/or settling in. Some documents that you should have available include the following:

  • Copies of your front page of passport and copy of visa page

  • Birth certificates of each family member

  • Marriage certificate

  • Drivers license

  • Adoption papers

  • Divorce and child custody papers

  • Immunisation documents of children (especially primary school aged children)

In addition, it would be useful to have a few copies of any employment contracts from your new employer which outlines terms of employment. It would also be advisable to be in contact with your local embassy once you have arrived in your new country to give your new contact details. These embassies will also assist if you need to renew passports, replace lost or stolen passports, tax returns etc. To find a list of embassies/ consulates in your new country, visit the yellow pages telephone book and search under embassies/consulates.

Job Search Referees and references in your CV

Referees and references might come at the end of our CV, but they are an extremely important part of your work experience. You need to pick referees carefully, as their comments can sway a prospective employer either towards or against you. Will they respond with appropriate comments quickly? With regards to who to choose, move away from friends, pastors or family. Concentrate on work related referees, people you reported to directly. You definitely must put down a reference from your present employer. If your current direct superior is not aware of the fact that you are looking at relocating, then get the contact details of a direct report that has left the company subsequently. You need at least three referees, so if you have been at the same company for the duration of your professional career, then you need to put down as many people that you have reported to directly as possible.

When it comes to the contact details of your referees, keep in mind that your details are being sent overseas, so we need as many contact details as possible. Get all the office numbers, cell numbers and also e-mail addresses of your referees. An e-mail address is crucial, as this would be the way initial contact is made, for example the prospective employer would e-mail to find out when would be a good time to call the referee.

Lastly, remember to check and make sure that your referees are willing to give a verbal reference. There is nothing more disconcerting than a referee who does not want to give comment on your performance, and lets the prospective employer know that! So make sure that your referees are aware that you have put them down as references, and to expect a call or two!
