JOB NEWS:
OVERSEAS HUNT FOR AUTOMOTIVE TRADES WORKERS
By CRAIG BILDSTIEN (The Advertiser – Adelaide, South Australia –
17Apr06)
SOUTH Australia's $8 billion-a-year retail motor industry has been
forced to look overseas for skilled workers. Facing critical shortages
of motor mechanics, auto electricians, spray painters and panel
beaters, the Motor Trade Association has asked the Immigration
Department to send skilled migration experts to Adelaide to help
employers recruit offshore. There are vacancies across the industry,
which services and maintains the state's 1.1 million registered motor
vehicles.
MTA executive director John Chapman says the association sponsored
more than 550 apprentices and trainees and channelled them "full-pelt"
into the workforce, but it was not enough.
"We could place 50 qualified tradespeople tomorrow," a frustrated Mr
Chapman told The Advertiser yesterday.
Eighty-five per cent of MTA members last May reported a shortage of
tradespeople in a state-wide survey, and most were not confident the
position would improve in the short term. The association is conducting
another survey this month, and Mr Chapman predicts staff shortages will
have worsened over the past year. "I think we will get a higher number
this year based on the feedback from members,"he said. Finding
sufficient workers was a "significant challenge" given SA's low
population growth rate, ageing population, low unemployment and strong
economic growth, Mr Chapman said.
"People are worried about the future, so we have to look overseas when
demand is outstripping our ability to supply labour," he said.
Mr Chapman, however, said the industry was mindful other countries
were doing likewise. Global competition for skilled workers was
intense.
He said the MTA initially would send delegations to Britain in the
hope of encouraging interest in jobs in Adelaide and regional SA.
Vice-president Colin Clarke, who runs Traction Tyre Services, recently
recruited a tyre fitter from Britain after he could not find
suitably-qualified candidates locally.
He said there still was a "tendency" among vocational advisers to push
tertiary education ahead of a trades career.
He did not believe publicity about the long-term viability of motor
vehicle manufacturing in the state, however, was having a negative
impact. "With more than a million cars on the road, that's not an
issue," he said.
The MTA would run a seminar on how to recruit overseas skilled labour
at its Greenhill Rd offices from noon on Thursday. The Federal
Government announced it would expand its skilled migration intake to
120,000 people a year. Mr Chapman said the challenge for SA was to
ensure it got its share.
A workforce seminar in Adelaide this month heard Australia faced a
shortfall of 195,000 skilled workers over the next five years. That
affected all major occupations.
Workforce Participation Minister Sharman Stone told the seminar
employers would need to become far more innovative in attracting and
retaining staff. She suggested one potential source of untapped labour
was the welfare sector, with 159,000 working-age people on benefits in
Adelaide.
